Outcomes of In-vitro Fertilization in Cases of Vaginal Washing with Normal Saline as Compared with Vaginal Disinfection with Povidon Iodine Before the Transvaginal Ultrasound-guided Oocyte Retrieval

Abstract
At present transvaginal ultrasound-guided transvaginal follicle aspiration is the routine procedure for oocyte recovery in in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer(IVF-ET) program. For vaginal disinfection, 1 % solution of povidon iodine(Betadine) is commonly used. However, the potential embryotoxic effect of Betadine exits.
In this study, we evaluated the influence of vaginal washing with normal saline on the outcomes of IVF-ET and the incidence of pelvic inflammatory disease as compared with vaginal disinfection with a 1 % solution of povidon iodine(Betadine).
The outcome of 149 oocyte retrievals in IVF ET porgram at Seoul National University Hospital was studied. For vaginal disinfection or washing, normal saline was used in 68 cases, and Betadine was used in 81 cases.
The fertilization rate was 58.8% in the normal saline group and 51.5% in the Betadine group. There was no significant difference in the fertilization rate between two groups. The pregnancy rate of the normal saline group(31.8 % clinical pregnancies per embryo transfer) showed no significant difference from that of the Betadine group(23.1 % ). And no clinical evidence of pelvic inflammatory disease was observed in both groups.
In conclusion, vaginal washing with normal saline is the acceptable and alternative method to the vaginal disinfection with Betadine for transvaginal ultrasound-guided oocyte retrieval in IVF-ET.
